Rawhide is a hide or animal skin that has not been exposed to tanning. It is similar to parchment, much lighter in color than leather made by traditional vegetable tanning. It is often used for objects such as whips, drumheads or lampshades, and more recently, chew toys for dogs. It is thought to be more durable than leather, especially in items suffering abrasion during use, and its hardness and its shapability render it more suitable than leather for some items. For example, rawhide is often used to cover saddle trees, which make up the foundation of a western saddle, while wet, it strengthens the wooden tree by drawing up very tight as it dries and resists the abrasion regularly encountered during stock work or rodeo sports. The buckle is a device used for fastening two loose ends, with one end attached to it and the other held by a catch in a secure but adjustable manner. The buckle essentially consists of four main components: the frame, chape, bar, and prong. The frame is the most visible part of the buckle and holds the other parts of the buckle together. Chapes or ""caps" of various designs could be fitted to the bar to enable one strap end to be secured before fastening the other, adjustable end. The prong (also named pin) is typically made out of steel or other types of metal. In conventional belts, the prong fits through the buckle to secure the material at a pre-set length. The bar served to hold the chape and prong to the frame. When prongs and chapes are removed from the buckle design, the buckle incorporated a movable bar relying on the tension of the adjusted belt to keep it in place. This Black Scalloped Leather Cowboy Hat Band with Oval Conchos and Rawhide Wraps has a buckle.

Today, the hat band can be an attractive accessory to change the look of all felt and straw hats. Changing the hat band restyles and personalizes a hat conforming to one's taste.
