Leather carving is the process of giving a three-dimensional appearance to leather craft objects or works of art by cutting and stamping the surface. All leather needs to be prepared a certain way for leather carvers to carve the leather. The leather carver will "case" the leather by soaking it in water, then letting it dry to the proper dampness, thus making the leather easier to tool. If the leather is too dry, impressions will fade over time, or will not be made to a consistent depth. Too wet, it will not hold a sharply defined carving. The original purpose of a leather hat band was to adjust the hat size to fit the head and cover the stitching where the crown and brim meet. The buckle is a device used for fastening two loose ends, with one end attached to it and the other held by a catch in a secure but adjustable manner. The buckle essentially consists of four main components: the frame, chape, bar, and prong. The frame is the most visible part of the buckle and holds the other parts of the buckle together. Chapes or ""caps" of various designs could be fitted to the bar to enable one strap end to be secured before fastening the other, adjustable end. The prong (also named pin) is typically made out of steel or other types of metal. In conventional belts, the prong fits through the buckle to secure the material at a pre-set length. The bar served to hold the chape and prong to the frame. When prongs and chapes are removed from the buckle design, the buckle incorporated a movable bar relying on the tension of the adjusted belt to keep it in place. The buckle can be adjusted to fit most any hat size....tightened for smaller hats and extended to fit large. It is adjustable with seven holes and can go from 24" to around 26" and can be made 1" longer or any length shorter by making a new hole in the band if necessary.
This hat band is 1" wide.
It has carved scroll pattern tooling over the entire length which gives it a classy look.
The edges are hand beveled, burnished, dyed and waxed for a rounded professional finish.
The buckle could be placed at the side or front of the hat.
To prevent loss of your new hat band, it should be anchored with a few spots of super glue.

Brown Carved Leather Hat Band - Item # AA-LC80bn
The Carved leather in brown went on a Stetson Dune 5X in Acorn. It looks AWESOME! The leather closely matches a leather jacket that I wear with the hat and everything looks great together. The beaded one with crosses went on a Stetson Dune 5X in black and it also looks AWESOME!

What made you want to try this product?
This was not purchased for a specific hat, but will end up on one of my wool felt hats. Many of the less expensive hat come with a cheap (sometimes plastic) leather band, so I got this as a replacement band.
What do you think of the Appearance?
I got this band for the color, since most of my hats tend to be brown, acorn, mink, etc., so this is sort of a generic color for those hats.
What do you think of the Durability?
It is a band of leather. What could go wrong? Aside from scuffing the surface, I think it will hold up very well - probably better than any hat that it is on!
What do you think of the Quality?
The quality is excellent - the tooling of the design is well defined, sharp, and has great relief.
What do you think of the Functionality?
I'm sure it will function well. I've had leather belts that lasted many, many years, so that is all I need it to do.
Would you recommend this product to a friend?
Yes.
Is there anything else you would like to tell me?
I would not add a thing to this hatband, but I am not one for glitz or too much bling. I like good quality, simple designs and this falls into that category.

I like wearing fedora hats and wanted something different than a ribbon hat band. When I saw the tooled leather hat band (I have many tooled belts) I thought it would be perfect.
What do you think of the Appearance?
The shiny finish and the tooling looks great.

The leather is nice and heavy and the fastener look like it will last.

The workmanship look great.

It's for aesthetics, not really functional like a belt.

The leather is brown so a brass fastener would look nicer than a silver/black one. Silver looks good with black, not brown.
